What is Surcharging?

Visa defines a surcharge as “a fee a merchant adds to a consumer’s bill [at the point of sale] for paying with a card and that is not charged on other forms of payment accepted by a merchant.” That fee is applied to the published price, which is the price paid when those other forms of payment are used.

What Isn’t Surcharging?
Cash discounting is NOT surcharging. Cash discounting is a practice Visa frowns upon and refers to as a cost deducted from the published price when a credit card is not used.

How Does Surcharging Save You Money?
The formula is simple: instead of your business covering the cost of credit card rewards, customers pay a small percentage of the repair order. For Visa, it’s 3% as of April 15, 2023—about $10.50 on a $350 transaction. This small fee can cut shop owners’ processing costs by 50%, saving tens of thousands of dollars.
